A final update

Cardinal Record Company is closing down effective September 21, 2022. We had a fun run, however, due to unforeseen circumstances and economic headwinds, we have no choice but to close our doors effective immediately. Here's what it means for you: 1. If you have an open pre-order with us, if we cannot fulfill it within the next couple of weeks we will issue a refund to the original method of payment. This may take 5-7 business days. It may take us a few days to get through all of the open pre-orders, please be patient with us. 2. If you have an open order from us that you ordered during our 40% off sale in the last couple of weeks, we got it! These are being shipped to clear out some of our existing inventory. Due to a surge in demand, however, it may take 5-7 business days for these to ship. 3. If you are an active Cardinal+ Member, your membership has been canceled and refunded for the current month. To the community that we love so much--thank you! We opened up our doors 18 months ago and set out to change the way shopping for vinyl online was done. We succeeded. We made vinyl collecting more accessible, offered a seat at the table for collectors of all ages, and we're so proud of the work we've done. This is goodbye for now. We'll all still be around and supporting other independent record stores. Thank you, for everything.

An update on our brick + mortar storefront

It is with great sadness that and heavy hearts that we announce the closure of our brick and mortar storefront effective immediately. Unfortunately, we are up against unprecedented economic headwinds and a changing market. We're getting ahead of the inevitable.  We opened up operations with a goal in mind to make vinyl more accessible to everyone. We're damn proud of what we have accomplished and could not have done it without the incredible team of people around us and the community that welcomed us so graciously. We find comfort in our decision today because of the abundance of fantastic local record stores in our community that also welcomed us with open arms. We encourage everyone in and around Louisville to support our other stores in the area. Guestroom Records and Better Days Records are both a stone toss from the store and can't wait to see you and serve you your wax fix.  To those that are disappointed, we understand. We're sorry. We're still going to be in the community, just differently. We are still shipping orders this week and will have more information about our online operation soon. We're otherwise pressing pause this week to allow our team the time to process. Please drop us a line, we would still love to hear from you. There will never be enough thank you's for all that you've done for us. It was one hell of a run. See you soon. Sincerely,  All of us at Cardinal Record Co. ❤️

Universal Music Price Increase

On May 20, 2022, Universal Music Group increased the suggested retail price on more than 2500 vinyl records in their catalog. We have always tried to be as transparent as possible, as we simply believe that is the best way to do business. So here's what it means. This list includes titles from The Beatles, Justin Bieber, Janet Jackson, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, Florence and the Machine, Kendrick Lamar, and so many more. This news came out of left-field to record stores as well as the consumer. This means that the wholesale cost for a lot of these records is now higher than the old suggested retail price. As a result, you will start to see higher costs on a selection of vinyl records in the coming days and weeks. Some records went up by a more modest $1-2. Others, however, went up by somewhere between $10-15. We knew it was only a matter of time before inflation crept into the vinyl resurgence with increasing labor costs, raw materials shortages, and increased demand. At Cardinal Record Co, if it is in stock as of Friday, May 20th, we will sell it at the old cost until it sells out. When it restocks, we have no choice but to use the new MSRP recommended by the labels. What this means for you: - You may see a higher cost for records everywhere. - You can, and should be more selective about what you shop for and more importantly, who you shop from. Local record stores will be hit the hardest by this and need your support the most.  - Continue to take advantage of our rewards programs and affiliate programs. This is the best way to bring some of these costs down. As of now, our rewards program remains unchanged. - You can and should continue shopping at locally owned shops. Not only does what you buy matters, but where you buy it matters more. $1 spent at your local record store goes MUCH further in supporting your local economy and workers than a dollar spent at a mega-corporation like Urban Outfitters, Target, and Amazon. Here's what that means at Cardinal Record Co: We're committed to paying our entire staff a living wage. Our minimum wage at Cardinal Record Co. starts at $15/hour, more than 2x the minimum wage in Kentucky. Additionally, we offer our entire staff health, dental, and vision benefits because we believe in a healthy workforce. 1% of all purchases goes to non-profits that are supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Cardinal Record Co. is moving to a new Louisville store soon!

The Cardinal Record Co. brick and mortar store is moving down the street to a bigger location that is more than 3x the current space! If you've been inside of the Cardinal Record Co. storefront in recent weeks, you may have noticed it has become a little tight. As we have experienced explosive growth, we have expanded our inventory, added new members to our staff, and have simply run out of space. We recently signed a lease on a new space just 2 minutes down the street. When are you moving? The current plan is to move at the end of May! We've been working on this in secret for a while and are finally almost ready to open it up to the public. The tentative date to soft open the new store is Wednesday, May 25th, plenty of time to prepare for RSD Drop #2 on June 18th! We will be closed on Monday, May 23rd and Tuesday, May 24th to complete the move but open like normal on Wednesday, May 25th. We are going to soft-open during the week while we get the new store setup. Please come say hi! We'll post more updates on our social media and here. Our full-scale grand opening for the new location will be on June 18th for RSD Drops 2. We will operate the store as usual out of the new location between May 25 and June 18. Why are you moving? We simply ran out of space. We had no idea when we opened a year ago that we would explode as fast as we did. Every single month has been exponentially better than the last. As we move forward, we want to continue to expand our inventory, our team, and host events. As it stands, we have hundreds of used records that we have not put out yet, we have to cap inventory orders, and more simply because we don't have the space. Our current storefront only uses about 600 square feet of retail space (the rest is backroom/shipping). The new space is more than 3000 total square feet. Moving will allow us to continue to grow to support our mission. Where exactly is the new location? 962 Baxter Avenue Suite 2C! It's just above the El Nopal (across from the Wicks on Bardstown Road). Once the sign goes up on May 12, you won't be able to miss it! This is conveniently located next to more stuff on Bardstown Road (including the Starbucks, Taco Luchador, and Wick's Pizza) and the local post office. When you come into the new building (the Baxter Center), simply walk up the stairs and come on in! Where will I park? You can park anywhere on Bardstown Road like you normally would. Directly next to us is the giant Walgreens/Starbucks parking lot and we are surrounded by a ton of street parking. Any other changes we should know about? No! Just a lot to be excited about. We have a ton more used inventory to put out, a lot of exciting releases coming this Summer, and more space to operate a full-scale Record Store Day for the RSD Drops on June 18 and then again for Black Friday this year!

Cardinal Record Co. Gives Back

In light of the recent attacks on transgender kids and LGBTQ+ youth around the country, Cardinal Record Co. is doing what it can to give back to nonprofits committed to equality. Cardinal Record Co. is a queer-owned record store located in Louisville, KY. The push around the country to roll back the rights of LGBTQ+ people is troubling and we are committed to doing anything we can to fight back. Starting on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 we are donating 1% of all sales made on our website or in-store to organizations committed to pushing for equality and protecting LGBTQ+ people. How does this work? 1% of your order total before shipping costs is split evenly across four charities -- The Trevor Project, Equality Texas, Equality Florida, and Queer Kentucky. This donation is made by Cardinal Record Co. at no cost to you. If you wish, you can round up your donation to the nearest dollar when shopping on our website. This entire amount is also split evenly across those four organizations. Does this work at the storefront? Yes! All sales at the storefront will also give 1% back to charity.
